It Felt Familiar Before It Happened

The Shift Client:

I had always been hopeful about finding a partner. It wasn’t something that consumed me at first, but as I got older, I started to feel the pressure.

At some point, I genuinely thought maybe love just wasn’t going to happen for me. That I was going to be one of those people who end up alone.

And not because I wasn’t trying. I was trying hard. I did the dating apps. All of them. I let my friends set me up. I even paid for those higher-end singles events because I thought maybe I just needed to be in different rooms with different kinds of people.

I was open. I was putting myself out there. I was doing the work. But no one was choosing me long term.

Things would start well, feel promising, and then end the same way. They’d pull away, stop replying, or tell me they didn’t see it going anywhere.

After enough of those, you start asking yourself what’s wrong with you.

That was the hardest part. Because I wasn’t avoiding growth. I was in therapy. I was self-aware. I was actively trying to be a good partner.

So I hit a wall of, what else am I supposed to do?

I even tried dating coaches. It was all strategy. What to text, how to act, how to “position” myself. It didn’t work for me.

I had never been into anything spiritual, but it was the only thing I hadn’t tried.

Working with Paulie, I realized something that honestly shocked me.

I wasn’t actually open to love.

I thought I was. I looked like I was. I knew how to be warm, interesting, easy to be around. But underneath that, I didn’t feel safe.

There was always this quiet tension. Like I was waiting for it to go wrong.

That was the shift.

It wasn’t about finding better men or doing more. It was seeing that love itself didn’t feel safe in my body.

The work wasn’t about forcing anything. It was about staying with those feelings instead of covering them up.

I stopped relating to love like something I had to earn or prove myself worthy of. It started to feel normal. Safe, even.

There was a moment in one of the sessions where she guided me into what my relationship would feel like. Not thinking about it, but actually feeling it.

It caught me off guard how real it felt. Like I was already there.

After that, something in me shifted. I wasn’t chasing anymore.

My life started to feel lighter, almost romantic in a quiet way.

Men from my past started reaching out again, apologizing, trying to reconnect. And for the first time, I didn’t feel pulled toward them. It felt done.

I kept returning to that feeling of the relationship I had experienced inside.

One night, I fell asleep almost talking to this person in my mind. Not in a forced way, it just felt natural. Like I already knew him somehow.

I remember thinking, I can’t wait to meet you.

And the next day, I literally bumped into him.

It was someone I had known years ago from an old job. Someone I hadn’t thought about in a long time.

We started talking, casually at first. It wasn’t even meant to be a date.

But the connection was immediate.

It felt easy. Natural. Nothing like the effort I had been putting into dating before.

And the strangest part was, it felt familiar. Like I already knew what this was.

This relationship feels completely different from anything I’ve experienced before.

I’m not anxious. I’m not trying to hold onto it. I don’t feel like I’m waiting for something to go wrong.

It just feels right.

He told me at one point that he had given up on love, and that meeting me felt like a miracle.

And I understood exactly what he meant.

Because that’s what it feels like to me too.
